Ready-to-grow mushroom kit
A ready bag of spawn and substrate already mixed for you. No pasteurising, no spawning, no guesswork. Expect your first harvest in a few weeks.
KES 1,500 per kit
The ready-to-grow kit is the shortest path from nothing to a first harvest. The substrate is already pasteurised and the spawn is already mixed through it, so the two difficult steps are done before it reaches you.
Inside one kit: the growing bag with the substrate and spawn already mixed and inoculated, so there is nothing for you to measure or combine. Message us on WhatsApp for the current contents and how many bags a kit contains.
What it does and does not include
This kit removes the two steps where a first-time grow usually fails: pasteurising the substrate and mixing in the spawn. Both require equipment and both need a fairly clean technique. What remains is the part you cannot buy, which is looking after the bags.
You still need somewhere with humidity and fresh air to fruit in, and you still need to manage that space. A kit in a dry, still room will dry out rather than fruit.
How to grow it
- Open the bag and check it. Healthy colonised substrate is white to cream, smells clean and fungal, and is loose rather than compacted. Green, black or orange is contamination.
- Move it straight to your fruiting space. Do not open it again; it is already colonised and there is nothing left to add.
- Cut a small slit in the bag, about 5cm long, or make a cross at the top. This is where the mushrooms will come out, and making one opening rather than tearing the bag open keeps the humidity inside.
- Keep the bag moist without soaking it. Mist the bag and the surrounding air, or the surface, every day or two.
- Keep it out of direct sun with good air movement, and open that slit 1 to 3cm when the first small mushrooms appear, so they have room to grow.
A bag fruits in one place, so it gives you one or two harvests and then slows down. After it has finished, it is still worth burying outdoors, where it will keep producing for a few months.
Which mushrooms you will get
Oyster mushrooms are the easiest to fruit and the most forgiving of imperfect humidity, which is why they are usually what a kit contains.
If you want to grow more than a few bags
The kit is the right first purchase to see whether you enjoy it. Once you know the fruiting stage is something you want, growing from spawn and substrate separately becomes cheaper per bag and lets you choose your substrate. That is the step we teach on the commercial training, along with contamination control.
Common questions
What is in the ready-to-grow kit?
The kit has the substrate and spawn already mixed and inoculated, in its own growing bag, so there is nothing to measure and nothing to mix. Message us on WhatsApp for the current contents and how many bags a kit contains before you order.
Which species is the kit inoculated with?
Message us on WhatsApp and we will confirm the species currently going into the kit, so you know what to expect before you buy. We rotate it as new runs come in.
How long until I can harvest?
Expect your first mushrooms 7 to 10 days after you slit the bag, once the substrate is fully white.
Do I need any other equipment?
You need somewhere with humidity and moving air to fruit in. A misting bottle is helpful but not essential, and a hygrometer lets you tell whether the room is actually humid.
Why is my kit not producing mushrooms?
Usually one of three things: the room is too dry, there is not enough fresh air, or it is too dark. Oyster mushrooms need light and air to fruit, even though they are grown in the dark until they are colonised.
Can I harvest more than once from one bag?
Yes, but expect it to slow down sharply after the first flush. When it has finished, bury the bag outdoors and it will keep fruiting for a few months.
